Space/Material Requirements
  • This project would be easiest to complete in an art room but can be adapted to any classroom space (an additional folding table or two may be required). Supplies needed would include paper, relief printing ink, masking tape, gloves, baby wipes, simple green solution, baby oil, and paper towel. If opting to include fabric printing into the residency, t-shirts, totes, or other fabric would need to be supplied as well. Printmaking tools, including the Woodzilla press, will be provided by Maplewood Studio.

Bio

Caitlin (she/her) is an ADHD printmaker working in Moncton, New Brunswick; the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik and Mi’Kmaq Peoples. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Mount Allison University and moved to Moncton to become a member of Atelier Imago printmaking studio in 2009. In 2018, Caitlin established Maplewood Studio, from which she teaches art lessons, prepares her “Artventures” art and eco-tourism day trips, and hosts events. In 2022, she and her partner Nat Cann repurposed a former church into studio space to house Maplewood Studio and work on their creative practices. In her free time, Caitlin can be found with her horses Oliver and Oscar or exploring the wilderness with her sketchbook and her dog Sadie.

Residency Project

This project will introduce students to the fine art medium of printmaking via the linocut method of printing. Linocut is a beginner friendly medium that does not require the use of a printing press, allowing students the possibility of further pursing the medium after the residency if they so desire. This medium creates multiple identical images, making it an excellent candidate for classes interested in making artwork to use for fundraising.

After an introduction to printmaking and an interactive printing demonstration on my portable Woodzilla printing press, students will learn how to plan a print, creating preliminary sketches and a visual plan of the image each student would like to create. From there, students will learn how to carve, prepare, and print their own linocut matrixes (the surface used to create the image) on the Woodzilla press to create an edition: a group of multiple identical prints, each considered to be an original piece of artwork.

Students who complete this project will learn about printmaking, image planning, and elements of art such as space, line, and composition. Linocut printing is a high reward artmaking medium, sure to be enjoyed by each classroom.

Teaching Experience

Caitlin has been teaching art lessons in drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media from Maplewood Studio since 2018. She has taught many workshops and interactive printmaking demonstrations at several locations throughout the Maritimes, including Atelier d’Estampe Imago, the Beaverbrook Gallery, and the Moncton Boys and Girls Club. In 2022, Caitlin taught in Estey Arts’ Art After School Program. In 2023, she worked with a local grade four class via the ArtSmarts grant program; teaching students how to create Styrofoam relief prints, which they sold to raise funds for local charities.
