Bio
Being hard of hearing, Janie developed her artistic senses through touch and visuals. Between 2010 and 2018, she obtained a DEC in fashion design at Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy, Quebec, and a BACC in fashion design and styling at UQÀM, Montreal. It was her experience as an intern at the Théâtre royal de la Monnaie in Belgium that triggered her ideas for her final university collection. The “ANTHROPOS” collection opened doors in the fashion industry: collaborations, dressing stars and even invitations to walk the runway. In 2020, COVID-19 made a stop at Janie's projects. She had to think about what to do next, and returned to her first passion, painting. Since then, new opportunities have presented themselves. In 2023, the multidisciplinary artist is moving from Montreal to her native Rivière-du-Portage, N.B., to continue her artistic journey and share her knowledge with the community.
Residency Project
As a multidisciplinary artist and fashion designer, I'd like to introduce students to the possibility of playing with various media, whether paint and/or textiles. I'd like to start with basic drawing and painting techniques. Then discover how to transform textiles using basic sewing techniques. It would be interesting to mix basic techniques and create works of art from them. Even transforming a garment into a work of art!
Since sewing is an art that's becoming increasingly rundown, it's time to keep it alive by passing on my knowledge to young people.
Teaching Experience
I have been invited on several occasions to teach visual art and sewing. My approach is to guide students in their creative processes, to help them discover their creative strength and to introduce them to techniques. I've also given many presentations about my career as a fashion designer and as a hearing-impaired person, in several primary and secondary schools. Currently, I teach sewing at the Société culturelle des Tracadilles, Académie Sainte-Famille in Tracadie. I teach sewing techniques to adults and children.
