Bio

Originally from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Richard Gibson holds a PhD in composition from King's College in London. He studied with eminent composers Steve Tittle, Peter Paul Koprowski and David Lumsdaine. He has won such prestigious awards as the 1983 SOCAN Young Composer of the Year Award, the Robert Fleming Award, and the New Brunswick Lieutenant-Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. For over 30 years, he has taught theory and composition at the music department at the Université de Moncton. In addition to his work as a composer and teacher, Mr. Gibson continues to pursue a wide range of musical activities: making classical music recordings, arranging and performing jazz music (double bass), as well as giving workshops to music educators and wind bands. Richard Gibson's work encompasses compositions in all vocal and instrumental genres, and ranges from pieces for solo guitar to large-scale works for multiple choirs and orchestra. His compositions are regularly heard in concert, on radio, in film and on CD.

Residency Project

I want to work with students to create an original harmony composition. With my guidance, students will be included in the composition process. Students will give their ideas, and we will create an original composition together, which can be performed and presented at the end of the project. They'll discover the steps involved in creating an orchestral composition and use their imagination to come up with a theme and ideas for it. They'll have to practice in the classroom the piece composed specifically with them and perform it in front of members of the school community.
