Elizabeth Pead

Liz Pead a obtenu un diplôme du Collège d'artisanat et de design du Nouveau-Brunswick en 1993 (conception de surface de tissu) et en 1995 (textiles). En 2007, elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en beaux-arts à l'OCADU, où elle a remporté la médaille en dessin et en peinture. Elle réalise des installations de paysages canadiens à partir d'à peu près tout ce qui lui tombe sous la main, y compris de l'équipement de hockey recyclé, de la laine, du fil et parfois de la peinture à l'huile. Elle a une sale petite habitude du dessin à l'encre.

Liz joue au hockey sur glace et a passé beaucoup de temps en Islande, à jouer au hockey et à être inspirée par le paysage et les artistes qui y vivent. En octobre 2013, elle a réalisé son " Hattrick " islandais ; les trois arènes nationales de hockey sur glace ont ses œuvres dans leurs collections. En mai 2014, elle s'est rendue à Blönduós, dans le nord de l'Islande, pour une résidence d'un mois à TextileSetur, où elle a étudié les matériaux, les techniques et les motifs traditionnels islandais.

Des explorations récentes utilisent le textile comme une peinture étendue, explorant les paysages par le dessin avec du fil sur des substrats métalliques tricotés et tissés. En 2016, Pead a participé à des ateliers de tissage de fils de cuivre avec Sayward Johnson (d'Ottawa) et de techniques avancées de tricotage à la machine avec Ursula Rautenbach (Heriot Watt University, Scottish School of Textiles ; Galashiels, Scottish Borders).

En 2017, elle a reçu le prix Mary Diamond Butts de Craft Ontario qui reconnaît l'excellence en broderie. Elle a voyagé en Allemagne, en Autriche et au Danemark pour faire des recherches sur l'histoire et les techniques du textile dans diverses institutions.

Son studio de Toronto se trouve dans le quartier des arts de Junction, à Toronto.

Tech giants Google, Microsoft and Facebook are all applying the lessons of machine learning to translation, but a small company called DeepL has outdone them all and raised the bar for the field.

Its translation tool is just as quick as the outsized competition, but more accurate and nuanced than any we’ve tried.

Personally, I'm very impressed by what DeepL is able to do and yes, I think it's really great that this new stage in the evolution of machine translation was not achieved with software from Facebook, Microsoft, Apple or Google, but by a German company.
